Telnov, Valimir 

(1918-1992)

 

Telnov was born in Caratov.  He studied in Stalingrad University from 1938 until he graduated in 1942.  In January of 1943 he was drafted into the military service.  After the war he became the city artist for Stalingrad and then an illustrator for several magazines in Russia.  During this period he was moving in interesting and influential social circles which influenced his later works.  He also began painting powerful and large scale battle scnes during this time.  This niche brought him much attention and eventually he became one of the most famous painters of historical events in the USSR.  In 1972 Telnov was named Honorary Artist of Russia by the Russian Artists Union.
